Ode to Christmas

We got things ready for Christmas, thought we’d host again this year,we started

planning early, knowing Christmas would soon be here.

We cleaned the house, its rooms, its floors, every pin and nail and tack,

No one cleans like this unless they want their deposit back!

We asked our families, and a friend, the ones who often come,

Who had plans? Who did not? The house began to hum.

At first we thought that we’d be 7, then 15, down to 9.

We changed our menu several times ‘fore we began to dine.

People cooked and then set out what it was that they had brought,

We had a feast on all this food, who ever would have thought?

Crackers, salmon, onion, cream cheese, lemon, capers, brie,

Sparkling cider, hot mulled cider, champagne, wine and tea.

Onion dip and flavored chips, and peanuts in two bowls,

Spiral-cut ham all honey glazed, green salad, twisty rolls,

Brussels sprouts all sautéed up, cuties and tri tip,

Oh wait, there was something else, indeed, a veggie tray and dip!

Christmas pudding lit on fire, candies made by hand,

Almond roca, M&M’s, squares of  chocolate, AND

Cookies, hard sauce and mince pie, enough to beat the band!

We did it well, we did it right, of that we have no fear!

I’m ever so really grateful that this comes but once a year.

Family came and family went, they ate, they laughed they played,

Everyone had a grand ol’ time - they stayed, and stayed, and stayed!

We talked some story, opened gifts, and had a lot of fun,

and before we knew it, it was late, and Christmas was all but done.

We cleaned up every dish and plate, every fork and knife and spoon,

the pots and pans, platters and bowls, oh won’t this end, like, soon?!?!?

We put away the Christmas boxes, and the Christmas bags;

the tissue paper, ribbon and tape, and don’t forget gift tags;

all the Christmas crackers, the gifts, stockings, and the bows;

the Christmas stufties, holiday magnets; all the Ho Ho Ho’s,

the Holiday towels, little trinkets, nutcrackers, angels, and trees …..

the candles, bears, trolls with santa hats,

the Christmas cards, and the holiday mats,

The train, the lights, the shiny stuff,

I think by now we’ve had enough!

Mele Kalikimaka is a very fun-filled song,

Next year I’m thinking Hawaii, and I’ll bring my man along!
