Starbucks Opens in Downtown Napa

The controversial downtown Starbucks opened its doors at 5 a.m. Thursday. Will you be stopping by for some coffee and perhaps a pastry? Wine and beer are not on the menu.

After months of anticipation and countless comments both for and against the downtown Napa Starbucks, the coffee shop quietly opened its doors at 5 a.m. Thursday.

An employee at the store said no customers had yet come in during the first few minutes, and that beer and wine are not currently on the menu.

She praised the shop's new Clover machine, which makes coffee one cup at a time.

It is the only Clover machine in Napa, the employee said.

Ritual Coffee Roasters formerly used Clover machines, but switched to drip coffee a couple of years ago.

The phone number for the Starbucks at the corner of First and Main streets is (707) 254-9745. Hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily except Friday and Saturday when it will close at 11 p.m.

The advent of the downtown store spurred protests and the formation of a group called Napa Local which opposed the Starbucks plan to set up shop just across the intersection from locally-owned Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company.

, has been called for 8 a.m. Saturday to flood the older café with business in a show of support.

Will you be there for the cash mob? Or are you all for Starbucks? Maybe something in between? Tell us in the comments.
