Happy New Year! Jewish High Holy Days Start Wednesday

Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year, begins Wednesday at sundown.

The celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins Wednesday evening.

In Napa, Congregation Beth Shalom will hold services at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Copia Building due to the congregation's synagogue at 1455 Elm St. in Napa being under construction.

Jewish holidays traditionally start in the evenings at sundown.

According to the Beth Shalom website, no tickets are available for the 7 p.m. Wednesday services led by Beth Shalom Rabbi Lee Bycel. However, some spaces are open for the 9 a.m. family services on Thursday morning.

Rosh Hashanah, Hebrew for "head of the year," is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days for the new year.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is another Jewish High Holy Day this fall. Yom Kippur begins on Sept. 13.
