Yahoo! CEO Orders Workers to Come to the Office...What Do You Think?

There are a lot of work-at-home Napans. How do you feel about this?

While transportation managers and ecologists praise the work at home movement for its fuel savings, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer says it is hurting creativity.

Mayer, whose company pioneered the concept of having the world of information at your fingertips, is now ordering those fingers to come to the office fulltime by June. Mayer joined Yahoo! last April after reaching the higher airs of Google.

She set an example against working from home by taking only two weeks of maternity leave after giving birth to her first child, son Macallister Bogue, on Sept. 30. She shocked some by saying that raising her first child was "easy."

Now she's cracked the whip for Yahoo's 14,000 employees, saying they are missing the creativity and water cooler collaboration that comes with working in an office. 

The director of Santa Cruz's People Power, an alternative transportation group, wasn't happy about the news.

"Telecommuting helps reduce vehicle miles graveled and is a policy that helps rather than detracts form our environmental goals," said Amelia Conlen. "It's a policy we support."

Mayer is the fourth CEO at Yahoo! in four years.

On the plus side, there are tangible benefits of both supportive and competitive interaction between team members from being together in the workplace. On the minus side, there can be so many distractions from working at home. Also, currently being self employed, I can vouch for the fact that it takes a lot of self discipline to efficiently work from home. When someone else is paying you a salary to work at home, I would suspect it might be considerably harder yet. I can certainly understand where Marissa Mayer is coming from with her decision.

What a disservice to all the women who paved the path for Marissa Mayer by fighting for flexible schedules and work-from-home options so employees could work and continue to be available to their families. It's 2013 and this edict takes us back a generation. Shame on Yahoo.

She has a family too, so if she's setting an example by also showing up to the office then she's making the same sacrifice she expects others to make. From another perspective though, how would people feel about this demand if she were a man? I've read quite a bit of praise from the business community. It is a savvy way get rid of many employees without layoffs or firings.

Women go to work to earn a check not to be available to their families. I love the family first attitude when it comes to work in this country. If you want to be available to their families during the work day, the comany should not pay for that.

I don't think it's geared towards women or mothers. For example, some positions in IT can be done remotely, or even writers for Yahoo can work remotely. She just used herself as an example. Give her a chance to exercise her ideas to improve the company she is employed by. I think it's a great idea! This isn't a gender issue. She is a career-driven person.

I think there is more creativity when people are bouncing ideas off others.

she is not setting an example, I'm sure her salary enables her to pay for help at home that others cannot afford. I hear she also has a nursery in her office - macy be she should be an example and allow all workers to bring in their babies? and it's not about working less, it's about being flexible. I leave work every day between 5 and 5:30 to pick up my kids, but I'm back at work after they go to bed. If I need to leave early, or work from home, my company understands and know that I will get the job done, and probably work MORE hours and be MORE productive because I am happy and content knowing I can both work hard, get my job done, and be there for my family.
