Love and Other Winged Things - Alumni Benefit Concert

The 2013/2014 season at the Napa Valley College Performing
Arts Center kicks off with an Alumni Concert on October 6, 2013 at 3pm in the
Loretta C. Silvagni Recital Hall.  One of our very own, Shannon Latimer,
coloratura soprano, graduated from Napa Valley College in 1997 with an
Associate of Arts degree in Fine Arts & Humanities.  Shannon will bring us an afternoon of literal
and metaphorical use of birds and wings in both opera and contemporary
literature, spanning from the baroque to the modern periods.  She will be accompanied on the piano by
Monroe Kanouse, M.A., a lecturer in music at Holy Names University in Oakland,
CA.  Encompassing the themes of love, longing, and liberty, the program features
Handel's "Sweet Bird", Leonard Bernstein's "Glitter
and Be Gay"
, as well as arias and songs by R. Strauss, Gabriel Fauré,
Reynaldo Hahn, Frank Bridge, Ned Rorem, and Hector Berlioz.

A complimentary reception will follow the performance at approximately 4pm, along with a personalized guided tour of the NVC Performing Arts Center by Dr. Eve-Anne Wilkes, Director of Vocal Studies at NVC.

This Alumni Concert is presented
in association with the NVC Office of Institutional Advancement and will
benefit the Judy Cochran Scholarship, an endowed scholarship fund established
in 1996 with the NVC Foundation.  Judy,
who worked as the college’s first hired Accompanist and vocal coach for 18 years, was and still is a valued treasure to the music department at Napa
Valley College.  This scholarship fund
was developed by the choral department students in the spring of 1996, and
presented to Judy in May of that year.
Several deserving NVC performing arts students have benefited from this
scholarship over the last 17 years, helping them to realize their dreams of
studying music at NVC and beyond.

Shannon was the first to receive the Judy Cochran Scholarship in both 1997 and 1998, which helped facilitate her continued pursuit of the Arts. An accomplished soprano, Shannon has been singing opera and classical music for nearly two decades.  She graduated from Napa Valley College, where she began her vocal studies with Dr. Eve-Anne Wilkes and earned an Associate of Arts degree in Fine Arts and Humanities.  She then earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Holy Names University, and has completed extensive graduate work in vocal performance, pedagogy, choral conducting, and Kodaly pedagogy.

Admission to the event is free: however, seating is limited.  The NVC Foundation will be offering a post-concert reception along with a tour of the
Performing Arts Center for those in attendance.
Please call the Napa Valley College Box Office at 707-256-7500 for reservations.  Donations will be welcome and accepted to further opportunities for future students wishing to pursue a career in music.  The Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center is located at 2277 Napa-Vallejo Hwy. in Napa. Parking is also free.
