Focus on Film: Porgy and Bess

To celebrate Black History Month, this week’s film is Porgy and Bess. Set in a fishing village in South Carolina of 1912, Bess (Cynthia Haymon), a disreputable woman, breaks free from her brutish boyfriend, Crown (Gregg Baker), after he commits murder. The crippled Porgy (Willard White) offers her a home, but their relationship is threatened by Crown’s return. Directed by Trevor Nunn, this production is a restaging of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera production for the BBC, thought by some to be faithful to what the creators intended. 1993; 184 minutes.
