From Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 novel of the same name, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” is a dark comedy directed by Terry Gilman. Journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his lawyer Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas on a drug binge. They nominally cover news stories, including a convention on drug abuse, but also sink deeper into a frightening psychedelic otherworld. As Vietnam, Altamont and the Tate killings impinge from the world of TV news, Duke and Gonzo see casinos, reptiles and the American dream. This film is part of the Library’s year-long focus on the theme, “Movies Made about Authors.
