CLASSIC FILM SCREENING: ON THE WATERFRONT (1954) starring Marlon Brando

In ON THE WATERFRONT (1954) Marlon Brando gives the performance of his career as the tough prizefighter-turned-longshoreman Terry Malloy. The film follows Terry’s deepening moral crisis as he must decide whether to remain loyal to the mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly and Friendly’s right-hand man, Terry’s brother, Charley (Rod Steiger), as the authorities close in on them.  Brando's scene in the taxicab with Rod Steiger ("I coulda been a contender"), features some of the best work either actor did, as two acting heavy-hitters go head to head and knock the proverbial ball out of the park! ON THE WATERFRONT contains musical genius Leonard Bernstein's only film score that combines screaming progressive jazz with the plaintive moans of a solo french horn producing a musical soundtrack that's as potent and explosive as the on-screen action. Driven by the vivid, naturalistic direction of Elia Kazan and savory, streetwise dialogue by Budd Schulberg, the film was an instant sensation, winning eight Oscars®, including for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Saint), and Screenplay. ON THE WATERFRONT is a compelling experience matched only by a handful of other films.Tuesday Night Flicks programmer and host Richard Miami will introduce the film with stories on its pre-production, on-set stories and the controversies surrounding its release.108 minutes
