Local Educator Announces Run For Napa Valley College Board of Trustees


Announcement from Elect Amy Martenson staff: 

Amy Kumpf-Martenson, an educator with more than 20 years of experience within the Napa public school system, is running to represent Area 2 on the Napa Valley College Board of Trustees in the November 2014 election.

Martenson was born and raised in Napa and attended local public schools. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from UC Berkeley and after earning her teaching credential, taught history at Vintage High School for nine years.

She then went on to obtain her Master’s degree in School Counseling from Sonoma State University and worked for nine years as the counselor at American Canyon Middle School.

Presently,she is the counselor at Valley Oak High School, Napa’s continuation high school.

In addition, she has been active in local, grassroots politics since 2006, working on both environmental and social justice issues.

Martenson is primarily seeking this seat to diversify the College’s funding sources while eliminating waste, expand vocational training options for students, and increase community participation in Board meetings and decision-making.

“A large majority of the students I work with as a high school counselor plan to attend Napa Valley College,so I have a personal and professional interest in the College providing better educational opportunities and experiences for them as well as for all stakeholders,” Martenson said.

“I have been in education my entire life, first as a student and then as an educator. I am ready and eager to apply my experience to help solve Napa Valley College's current challenges and make it a more vital asset for the whole community.”

Martenson’s candidacy has been endorsed by both the current and past two student trustees on the Napa Valley College Board of Trustees, April Clary, Alex Shantz,and Ruscal Cayangyang, respectively, as well as Monique Yablon, Adjunct Nursing Faculty, and Bob Lortz, Student Services Specialist, both at Napa Valley College, Jay Golik, Architect and retired Art Professor at Napa Valley College, Dr. Gregory Matsumoto, Psychologist and former Cultural Diversity Consultant to Napa Valley College, and the Queer Student Alliance and Campus Greens at Napa Valley College.
