4 p.m. weather update: Rain tapering off by Sunday, more coming Tuesday, freeze warning possible by Thursday

Heavy rains to decrease overnight; but a "vigorous storm system" will hit by Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

A "hazardous weather outlook" issued by the National Weather Service at 4 p.m Saturday predicts waning rainshowers and a lingering chance of thunderstorms Christmas night, but renewed storm activity starting early next week.

After a partly cloudy Sunday and mostly sunny Monday, with temperatures in the mid-50s both days, forecasters predict a period of heavy rain beginning Tuesday and chillier temperatures in the following days:

"Cold air will follow the midweek system and cold nights are forecast late in the week, with possible freezing temperatures in the valleys late Thursday night," according to the NWS.
