"Occupy" Movement Returns to Park

The organizers of last week's 24-hour protest say they'll be back for another round-the-clock stint in Veterans Memorial Park, starting Saturday at 11 a.m.

Update: The start time of the 24-hour demonstration has been changed to 11 a.m. Saturday, according to Gifford.

 The nationwide, leaderless movement that began a month ago in New York City has developed a strong contingent in Napa.

Last weekend, dozens of local protesters took part in a in Veterans Memorial Park downtown.

A 20-minute YouTube video, which accompanies this story, follows the protesters over a period of several hours as they give speeches and engage in sometimes-heated debates with passers-by.

The activists, and/or members of , say they're headed back to the park for a second round-the-clock "occupation" starting Saturday at 11 a.m.

"We will not discourage people from individually choosing to bring tents and sleep overnight if they wish," reads a statement on the Occupy Napa Facebook page.

Although camping is prohibited in city parks, police and parks staff overlooked the infractions last weekend, when many tents went up.

According to organizer Joanne Gifford, president of Democrats of Napa Valley, about 60 people took part in the first protest.
