Napa To Revisit GMO Labeling Law

Napa Area Food Advisory Council to take up the issue on Nov. 21.

Napa City Council members said today they will wait until after a meeting this month of the Napa Area Food Advisory Council to explore adoption of a new resolution in favor of GMO labeling.

Councilman Scott Sedgely first proposed the group craft a new resolution this month. He said he's had numerous inquiries from residents, many of whom voted last year for the statewide Prop. 37, which ultimately failed, but which had a lot of support in Napa, he said.

Councilwoman Juliana Inman said she was also thinking about the issue, which she said is due to come up Nov. 21 at a meeting of the Napa Area Food Advisory Council. She suggested City Council wait until after the Nov. 21 meeting to discuss plans for a new resolution.

Inman said she did not immediately have word on the time for the Food Advisory Council meeting, which would likely be held at their offices on Soscol Avenue, she said. She said she would get the information and let people know about the meeting schedule.

Both Sedgely and Inman said they would hope Napa Valley grape growers and vintners would also buy in to support GMO labeling.

"We've already asked the growers and the vintners for their policies on GMOs," Inman said, referring to the Food Advisory Council.
