College Cuts Back on Printed Schedules

Everything's now online, and going paperless saves money and helps the environment, according to a dean at Napa Valley College.

is cutting back on printing and mailing its class schedules.

At one time, NVC  printed and mailed 70,000 schedules to nearly every household in the county.

This year, only about 17,000 class schedules were printed for the fall semester, according to dean of instruction Faye Smyle, dean of instruction.

Smyle could not cite a dollar amount of savings from reducing the number of copies printed and mailed to county residents, but said in an e-mail that it was both a cost-cutting measure and a more efficient way to reach students.

“(Especially) given the major state cuts to (our) college budget,” she wrote. “And because more and more is being done online. ... Young people are focused on getting more information using new media,” she added.

Smyle said the cutback in printing is also “in support of environmental concerns. We feel (this) is more environmentally friendly to have schedules online than to print them.”

Smyle said although NVC is phasing out mailing schedules, “we do have some printed schedules available on campus.

"It is also being delivered to community locations, such as libraries.”

Moving course information online is a change many colleges have adopted, Smyle said.

“This has been going on with colleges nationally for several years. Many have already stopped printing and are all online,” Smyle added.

“We are still printing and distributing a limited number of hard copies — just not mailing to all households,” Smyle said.

The complete fall schedule is available at www.napavalley.edu and information is also available by calling (707) 253-3020.

State-set tuition fees are now $36 per unit.
