I visited Dr. Thuma seeking help coping with some anxiety and insomnia issues I was experiencing. I didn't have a recommendation for him, but he was one of the few psychiatrists covered by my health insurance and he was accepting new patients so I thought I would give him a try. Oh, how I wish I would have done some asking around first. In two visits (lasting maybe 10 to 15 minutes a session), he prescribed me 5 different powerful drugs. When I told him I have reason to suspect I may have a hereditary condition, he actually laughed at me. He said, no I don't think that's your problem. This is within five minutes of meeting him. Yet he immediately felt confident of knowing me and my state of mind well enough to prescribe very strong drugs?

Against my better judgement, I went ahead and tried the first round of drugs. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience and it made things worse which sadly isn't uncommon with these drugs. He wanted to then put me on even more powerful drugs. These are drugs one is supposed to take only for a few days to a week at maximum. He was prescribing them for long term use. When I confronted him about that, he said he had many clients that have been on these "short term" drugs for years under his guidance. That told me everything I needed to know. Since I don't want to live a life under strong and potentially dangerous medication, I made that my last session. I have since shared my experience with other Dr's and health professionals and their jaws dropped when they heard about what he prescribed and the duration he wanted to keep me on them.

Needless to say, Dr. Thuma's bedside manner is not one of listening to his patients, nor does he seek to establish trust and come up with a thorough plan to help you get better. If you are seeking out a Dr. to write a script for whatever drug you ask for, I suspect you will be thrilled with his service. If you are unlucky enough to find your way to his office in a state of stress, looking for real comprehensive help, then I am truly concerned for your safety. I have since found two other past patients of Dr. Thuma and their bad experiences were equally as shocking as mine. Don't make the same mistake I did. I should have done my research and driven further to seek out better care or even paid out of pocket for a closer doctor. Since consulting with other professionals who listened to my original problems, I'm doing much better and without all the strong, dangerous drugs.
