MLK National Service Day

Martin Luther King would be proud of these volunteers.

President Obama encouraged everyone to perform some sort of public service to honor Martin Luther King. The weekend of January 19th-21st marked the National Service days and Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District was fortunate to have ten volunteers on Jan 19th. All were local if you consider Santa Rosa and Bay Point local. Recent storms wreaked havoc on trails and water often times can be a trail's #1 enemy. In the spirit of volunteerism we hiked about one and a half miles up beautiful Oat Hill Mine Trail carrying tools talking about the 49ers, Napa Pipe, rising oceans and Lance Armstrong. After reaching our work site we took off our day packs and discussed the drainage issues. After deciding the best method of correcting the problem, we all spread out and started digging dirt, lopping brush or gathering rocks. By 3pm we had not only solved the world problems and had pizza and beer, but we also managed to keep Oat Hil Mine Trail safe to use for more years to come.
