Health & Fitness

October is here, watch out for Zombies!

Zombies aren't real but the flu prevention & preparedness messages are. My Zombie Blog will chronicle the fictional "2012 Zombie Pandemic" with important messages to protect your health!

Reality Check

This year Napa County Public Health is putting a twist on one seasonal flu vaccine clinic.  However I want to make it clear: there’s no such thing as the “Zombie Flu” but seasonal influenza AKA “the flu” can make you feel like a zombie.  In order to avoid any “War of the Worlds” moments, I’ll preface future Zombie Blog entries with the following text: “This is an exercise. Zombies aren’t real but the flu prevention and preparedness messages are.”

October 2012: Zombie Pandemic Scenario

This October I hope you follow my Zombie Blog entries unfolding the “Zombie Flu” scenario developed by the Napa County Public Health Division with the goal of increasing attendance at the “Zombie Flu” Vaccine Clinic and Halloween Health Fair on Oct 31 from 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. at the Napa County Health and Human Services Agency on 2344 Old Sonoma Road in Napa.  Anyone age 3 years and over can get free seasonal flu vaccine at the clinic.  In addition to free flu vaccine (shots and spray) there will be a Halloween Health Fair teaching flu prevention through healthy behaviors, free zombie makeup up and free, healthy goodies from the Napa County Red Cross (while supplies last).

Napa County Public Health and partners, including the Napa City Fire and Napa Valley College are prepared to vaccinate hundreds of people between 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. on October 31.  Local officials are using this flu vaccine clinic as an exercise to practice emergency response plans to rapidly distribute vaccine or medication to everyone in Napa County in response to an infectious disease outbreak, such as a new pandemic flu virus, or bioterrorism, such as an anthrax attack.

Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself

We don’t want to scare anyone, especially kids, but let’s face it just like real emergencies zombies can be scary. The best way to address fear is talk about it and prepare for the unexpected.  You can find out more from Napa County Public Health here: www.countyofnapa.org/publichealth/zombieprep.
