Women in Napa now have a fitness club that's just for them: Amica Studios at 1014 Coombs St., just off First Street downtown.
"I just felt like there was a need for an all-women's place," said proprietor Lori Jones. (Napa has had women's fitness clubs in the past, but Curves and Lady of America—both national chains—closed their local operations years ago.)
A Napa native with nearly 30 years of experience teaching fitness, more than 20 of them at downtown institution , Jones recruited former Exertec head trainer Amanda Tronstad as her second in command.
The two have created a welcoming workout space with a comfortable lounge area, gift shop and tea service, all geared to make women feel at home.
"Amica refers to a female friend in Italian," said Jones, explaining how she chose the name for her new venture.
Amica Studios offers more than a dozen different exercise classes including yoga, Turbo Kick, Pilates mat and Zumba in both English and Spanish: Complete descriptions are posted at amicastudios.com.
This weekend, Jones and Tronstad are welcoming new and prospective members from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the former site of Bookends bookstore, adjacent to Kohl's.
A Zumba class at 10 a.m. Saturday is $10, which is the club's standard drop-in fee for classes lasting 60 to 75 minutes. The drop-in fee for 90-minute classes is $15.
Starting Monday, unlimited classes cost $62 a month, for a six-month commitment, with a $55 registration fee. Jones and Tronstad will also offer personal training, they said.
While the club doesn't offer child care or locker rooms, its downtown location and access to parking make it an option for many women who prefer all-female classes.
"We've got early-morning classes, so it's perfect for somebody that works," Tronstad said.
There are also two "Girls Movement" classes, for ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 12; the cost is $5 for non-members.
The weekday at Amica Studios begins at 5:45 a.m., with the last class at 6:45 p.m.; weekends have a lighter schedule.
