Winery Allegedly Bottled More Than Allowed, Will Pay $1 Million to County

Caymus Vineyards agreed to pay a $1 million fine for allegedly bottling more wine than allowed.

A Napa Valley winery is in hot water over allegations it bottled too much vino.

Caymus Vineyards in Rutherford bottled about 830,000 cases of wine last year, while its use permit only allows 42,000 cases each year, according to Wine Spectator

“It’s a complicated matter, but basically we disagree with the county on the use permit," winery owner Chuck Wagner told that news outlet.

The vineyard has agreed to pay a $1 million fine to Napa County "rather than engage in a lengthy debate," Wagner was quoted as saying.

Caymus recently purchased land near Fairfield for a second vineyard.
