Where's the Best Pizza in Napa?

This week, the enticing list gets longer. What's your recommendation?

One story goes that in Naples, Italy, in the late 1800s, a baker named Raffaele Esposito created a dish for visiting royalty, the Italian monarch King Umberto and his consort, Queen Margherita.

Raffaele chose to top flat bread with food that would represent the colors of Italy: red tomato, white mozzarella cheese and green basil. The king and queen were so impressed that word spread and others began to copy it.

In the early 1900's pizza made its way to the United States, thanks to Italian immigrants.

Nice start, Raffaele. If only you could check out Napa's pizza scene.

My good friend Jean DeLuca lives in Calistoga now and is in the business of offering wine, food and travel marketing. She often makes her own pizza pilgramage down valley and into the town of Napa. “I always love Pizzeria Tra Vigne, but if you're saying Napa proper, then it's Pizza Azzurro and Ca’ Momi at the Oxbow Public Market.”

Tom Fuller and his family have their favorites. “We love the Salsiccia pizza (fennel sausage, red onion, tomato sauce and Mozarrella) at Azzurro. Except for my vegetarian wife! She loves the Formaggio and Verde pizzas. We also like the Italian pies at Ca’ Momi.”

Monty Sanders, Tom’s business partner, says his favorite is from Bistro Don Giovanni. “We have a monthly group that meets for lunch and I nearly always have pizza.  It’s always seasonal and always killer.  In fact,” said Sanders, “they sent their chef to spend time with Nancy Silverton at Mozza Pizzeria in LA to further refine their technique.”

Just as I was about to submit this piece, I received an email from Fuller.

“I almost forgot -have you seen the amazing pizzas at the Model Bakery? Sold by the slice at lunch - enormous, and made daily at the bakery- great for a quick lunch. One slice can almost feed two - from what I remember, they usually have a veggie and meat option daily.”

For those who haven’t experienced the Model Bakery, it started in St. Helena and now is also at the .
