Rancho Gordo Beans Hit Supermarket Shelves

The Napa-based company has kept a pretty low profile in its home town, but now we have multiple places to buy the same beans used by some of North America's greatest chefs.

Steve Sando's is truly a : He started in Napa and had his earliest success at Upvalley farmers markets, where restaurateur Thomas Keller discovered Sando's delectable .

But until a few years back, when Sando opened his retail showroon on Yajome Street just north of downtown Napa, Napa bean-lovers had limited local sources for Rancho Gordo's famed legumes. We could choose from a selection at the , buy direct from Sando's mail-order business or visit his farmers market stall, now located at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza market.

So it's good news to see that is also stocking the Rancho Gordo line, which has won international praise and landed Sando on some of the food world's most prestigious best-of lists -- not to mention some of Napa's tastiest restaurant menus (, ).
