Peter Mondavi Sr. Celebrates His 98 Years in Charles Krug Ceremony

Co-founder of "Mondavi Dynasty" honored at winery he's owned since 1943

Peter Mondavi Sr., turned 98 years old last Thursday, Nov. 8, and celebrated with birthday cake and bubbly, and a rousing happy birthday song, at the St. Helena winery he and his brother Robert Mondavi purchased in 1943.

In his nearly 70 years at Charles Krug Winery, Mondavi has championed cold fermentation and cold sterile filtration among other innovations whose "historical impact on the Napa wine business has been monumental," according to a spokesperson. A Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by Jeff Marinelli on behalf of Art and Living Magazine at the event.

Friends and four generations of family were present at the winery carriage house for the afternoon party on Nov. 8. Peter Mondavi Sr. was born November 8, 1914 in Virginia, Minnesota.

Mondavi has outlived his older brother Robert, who passed away in 2008. The two famously had a falling-out over the running of the Krug winery, in 1965.

Peter Mondavi Sr. runs Charles Krug Winery with his sons Marc and Peter Jr.
