'Wonder of the World' Comedy Opens July 12 at Napa Valley Playhouse

Giddy adventure comedy runs July 12-28.

David Lindsay-Abaire’s giddy adventure comedy, “Wonder of the World,” opens Friday, July 12 at Napa Valley Playhouse for a two-week run.

The tale, performed by a cast from Lucky Penny Productions, begins when Cass Harris discovers something shocking in her husband Kip's sweater drawer, leading her to question everything’s she’s based her life on.

Before you know it, she flies off in a frantic – and hilarious - search for freedom, enlightenment and the meaning of life. In her journey she meets up with Lois, the funniest bitter and suicidal alcoholic ever known; a handsome but lonely tour-boat captain; a pair of inept detectives; and the most memorable marriage counselor ever seen on stage.

It’s a wondrously wild comedy in the unique and unforgettable style of David Lindsay-Abaire, author of “Fuddy Meers,” “Good People,” and the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Rabbit Hole.”

“Wonder of the World” features Katie Kelley, LC Smith, Zac Schuman, Rob Broadhurst, April Krautner, Cassi Tynan and Barry Martin. Fresh off her starring role in “Funny Girl,” Lucky Penny co-founder Taylor Bartolucci directs the production, and also serves as sound and costume designer.

“We picked up this script on a visit to New York about two years ago,” said Bartolucci. “I read about five pages on the plane coming home and knew right away I wanted to produce it. I have a terrific cast, it’s wild and crazy fun, and I’m excited for audiences to come take the ride with us.”

Astute viewers will notice bits and pieces from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice” stories, which were used for inspiration by Lindsay-Abaire, in character names, places, and the illogical logic of the story itself.

Tickets are available at www.napavalleyplayhouse.org or by calling 707-255-5483. Ticket buyers take note: Performance dates and times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm except there will be no performance on Saturday July 13, and there will be two performances, at 2pm and 5pm, on Sunday July 14.
