Weekend Planner Sept. 16-18

There's a whole lot going on in Napa this weekend. Check and see if there's something for you.

Friday-Sunday:

Wild horses, burros and mules, including some halter-trained mustangs, will be available for adoption when the Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horse and Burro adoption program comes to Napa Mustang Days Friday through Sunday.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) adoption event will feature about 20 young mares, geldings, fillies and colts, 10 jack and jenny burros and two mules.  Several horses have been trained to halter by BLM volunteers. Interested adopters can preview animals when they arrive at about 2 p.m. Friday.  The adoption begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with two hours of silent bidding.  Animals not taken during bidding will be available for a $125 adoption fee for the remainder of the weekend.

The true-life quest of a terminally-ill ten-year-old boy who longs to capture the most beautiful butterfly on the planet comes to life on the screen in a touching drama directed by Léa Pool and starring Academy Award-winner William Hurt. In order to appreciate life to its fullest, an aging entomologist learns that sometimes all you have to do is come out of your cocoon. When the young boy's mother convinces the renowned insect-expert to accompany her son on the journey of a lifetime, the courage that the terminally-ill child shows in realizing his dream inspires a man who has lived his entire life in a lab to get outside, connect with his fellow man, and experience the wonder of nature firsthand.

Saturday:

Come join a celebration of Mexican Independence Day at the   Enjoy traditional food, music and dance while experiencing the rich, cultural heritage of of Mexico at this free family event. Learn about Mexico’s historic struggle to achieve independence and enjoy music, regional costumes, and Mexican food. Visitors will learn history, witness the daring of the Charraria, and watch traditional dances from the Napa Valley Ballet Folklorico and ballet Xochitlquetzal.

If you go: This free event is open from noon to 5 p.m. at the , 55 Presidents Circle in Yountville.

Saturday and Sunday:

The latest Friends of the book sale kicks off this weekend with a members-only sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you’re not a member you can join on the spot, or wait until Sunday when the sale runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the library’s community room. Sale hours for the rest of the week are 10 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday is always half-price day, and the final weekend of the sale brings blowout prices for books by the bag. The sale continues until September 24.

Saturday:

The Grammy-award winning guitarist, nicknamed "Captain Fingers," takes the stage with his band, featuring: John Beasley (keys), Melvin Davis (bass) and Chris Coleman (drums). Ritenour has recorded over 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, notably the Top 15 hit "Is It You," which has become a contemporary jazz radio classic. In the 90s, Ritenour was a founding member of Fourplay, the most successful band in contemporary jazz. Adding to this legacy is his latest CD Smoke ‘n' Mirrors.

Sunday:

The 2nd Annual Napa Valley BBQ Battle takes place this Sunday afternoon. Hosted by , and the , the barbecue throw-down will benefit the Music Connection Program. The Music Connection has been supporting students of the Napa Valley with musical instruments and opportunities for over a decade.

Guests attending Napa Valley BBQ Battle will be spoiled with great wine, food and entertainment. People’s Choice judging as well as celebrity judge and cookbook author James McNair, will determine who has the best BBQ; live music throughout, featuring Napa Valley Education Foundation Teacher of the Year, Alan U’Ren. This year the Battle will feature three highly regarded barbeque enthusiasts: from the Napa Valley Marriott, Executive Chef Brian Whitmer, from , Hospitality Director Pat Burke, and from , Chef de Cuisine Joey Ray.

If you go: General Admission is $65, and the teacher discounted price is $50; tickets can be bought by clicking here. The barbecue is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the , 3425 Solano Avenue in Napa.

Sunday:

Join friends and family for another enlightening and informative Sundays at the Society event, this time a book launch of the brand new book Napa Valley Farming, hosted by the . The authors are well-known local poets and historians Paula Amen Judah and Lauren Coodley in collaboration with the Napa County Historical Society. The book will be available for purchase and the authors will be on hand to sign the book. Napa Valley Farming highlights the contributions made by native inhabitants along with the diverse immigrant population including Chinese, Japanese, African, and European Americans.  These workers picked wheat, hops, fruit, and nuts and tended cattle and beehives in this valley. Recipes and poems celebrating the bounty of the Napa soil are included as well. 

If you go: This event is free for members with a suggested $5 donation for non members. This event  is from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m at the , 1219 1st Street (the Goodman Library) in Napa.

Saturday and Sunday:

Come visit this lovely garden filled with art and artists including: Susan Callagy, Tracy Fitzgerald, Ruth Hall, Ann Trinca, Florence Whisenant, and Nina Zaslove. All kinds of art, antiques, gifts, and collectibles.

If you go: This free event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1080 Summit Avenue in Napa. The garden is also open next weekend, September 24-25.

Sunday:

Love Songs from Nat, Frank, and Billie carries the audience back to the 1950’s when crooners sang about found love, lost love, drinking, joy, and daily life. Roberto-Juan González joins the Michael Parsons Jazz Trio in a solo concert of what he calls “saloon songs,” including “Angel Eyes,” “One for My Baby” and “Witchcraft.”

If you go: Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students, seniors and military personnel. To buy tickets, please call the Napa Valley College Box Office at 707-256-7500 and leave a message. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. at , 2277 Napa Vallejo Hwy in Napa.

Sunday:

Join for a walking tour of the Alphabet Street neighborhood. Historically known as part of Spencer’s Addition, the Alphabet Streets are home to an eclectic array of architecture. Learn about the electric interurban railroad that connected the area to the rest of the city and catch a glimpse of the house where the loudspeaker was invented.
