Smooth Start at BottleRock "Locals" Night

Festive crowd enjoys new venue.

BottleRock Napa Valley's opening day Wednesday went off smoothly and on a festive note.

"I'm having fun," said Claire Martin, 23, of San Rafael as she listened to the sounds of "Family of the Year," a band that played earlier in the evening.

"I'm really excited about hearing 'Macklemore and Ryan Lewis,'" Martin said, referring to the evening's headliner. "That's the main reason I came."

Martin was one of between about 8,000 and 10,000 attendees at the inaugural music festival's opening day.

Napa police and firefighters on patrol at the event said there were no major disturbances to report.

"Everybody's just getting a feel for it right now," said Napa Fire Paramedic Julian Kowalski. "Over the next few days will be when it really gets busy."

Napa Police Capt. Jeff Troendly said one woman was arrested for being intoxicated and police helped two children find lost parents.

"Last night required minimal law enforcement interaction, as crowds were well behaved within the event," Troendly said.

He said the police department received less than 15 calls outside of the BottleRock venue, mainly dealing with parking issues.

"There were two calls regarding loud music, and there were no calls related to unruly concert goers arriving or leaving the event," Troendly said.

No major traffic delays were reported before or after the event, but larger crowds are expected today and throughout the weekend, so there may be tie-ups as the event continues, he said.

along with the Black Crowes, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts -- and numerous other bands.
