Napa's "Porchfest" Music Festival Coming July 31

The deadline to express your interest in taking part is today, May 16 at 5 p.m.

On a summer Sunday afternoon, there's music in the air -- live music, by local performers, playing on the front porches of homes throughout Napa's historic neighborhoods.

It's called , a one-day community celebration scheduled for July 31, 2011 from 2 to 5 p.m.

The idea of a house-by-house, homegrown music festival originated in Ithaca, N.Y. a few years ago and has since been adopted successfully in a number of other cities.

Napa organizer Juliana Inman got the Porchfest bug after reading a Facebook link to an on the Somerville, Mass. Patch site.

"We have almost 3,000 historic homes in Napa, and most have porches," said Inman, an architect who is a member of both the and the board of preservation group .

More than a dozen of those historic porches, volunteered by homeowners in neighborhoods from Alta Heights to Old Town, will become informal music stages during the three-hour festival.

Participating musicians include Napa's rock sensation (formerly Serf and James), , Eloquence String Quartet and the acoustic guitar duo of John Ruch and Larry Otis.

The deadline for musicians and porch owners who want to take part in Napa Porchfest is Monday, May 16 at 5 p.m.
