JAZZ SOCIETY PRESENTS: MUSIC OF COLTRANE, HARTMAN &

The Napa Valley Jazz Society (NVJS) presents the next of its monthly Parlor Jazz events, “Celebrating 50 Years of Impulse! Records,” Sunday, November 20th, at 4:00pm, at Silo’s Jazz Club, 530 Main St., in Napa. Pianist and leader Larry Vuckovich brings reedman Noel Jewkes, bassist Jeff Chambers, drummer Lorca Hart, and singer Jamie Davis to this concert paying tribute to a special era in jazz history.

“Impulse!: The House that ‘Trane Built” describes this prestigious label of top-quality ‘60s jazz recordings by John Coltrane, Johnny Hartman, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins and Oliver Nelson’s Blues and the Abstract Truth, featuring its signature track “Stolen Moments.” The label was launched in early 1961 with its slogan: "The New Wave Of Jazz Is On Impulse!"  Founder Creed Taylor and his successor Bob Thiele fulfilled that promise in a variety of musical directions. Albums with well-defined concepts and cutting edge music were the label's forte.

The concert program will include interpretations of some of the great jazz recordings of all time, including Coltrane-Hartman, Duke-Coltrane, Duke Meets Hawk, and Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments.”  “With the tremendous interpretive skills of Larry doing Duke and Noel doing Coltrane, and the rich baritone voice of Jamie, combined with this stellar rhythm section, we can expect a rekindling of the emotions we feel when listening to those prized recordings,” said Bill Hart, event producer and president of the Jazz Society.
