Donors Save Music Classes in Napa

A two-month fund drive raised $85,000 to continue music programs in the Napa Valley Unified School District.

The bands will play on in Napa’s public elementary schools, thanks to the success of an ambitious led by director Robin Hampton.

The longtime head of the foundation’s Music Connection instrument-rental program for schoolchildren, Hampton was determined to that the school district, strained by years of state budget cuts, could no longer afford to support.

“Our elementary music (program) was on the cutting block, and Robin put forth an amazing effort to sustain elementary instrumental music,” said foundation board member Katie Aaron.

Before a cheering crowd of more than 150 educators and parents at the foundation’s annual Wine Festival at the Yountville Community Hall Friday, Aaron said the fund drive had met its $85,000 goal.

“The amazing thing is that so many of you gave,” Hampton said. “You saw a need, it became a burden and we all gave.”

Hampton added that while this year’s drive to save music programs has concluded, the 2012 campaign has already begun.

“ had a concert last night … and raised more than $2,000,” she said.
