Artists Open Studios This Weekend

Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., we are invited into the creative work spaces of 72 juried artists in 48 locations throughout Napa Valley.

I have to admit --it’s hard to be bored living in Napa.

Why? Because the options for discovery are only as limited as your curiosity and imagination!

Take, for instance, Napa’s delicious “” featuring state-of-the-art culinary environments of novice and professional chefs.

Then we can do-si-do down to the “” in which you can stroll through historic sheds as well as view the most modern replicas of traditional structures.

And, to treat our ears, we now have Porchfest, featuring a multitude of “front porches” on which musical groups of all styles play during one sunny, July afternoon.

, however, is by far one of the most satisfying, energizing and enjoyable annual events offered throughout the community.

Whether an avid collector or just curious about art, Open Studios is the opportunity to;

  • visit studios
  • meet, observe and purchase directly from local artists
  • watch live demonstrations including painting, sculpting, glass-blowing, pottery, jewelry making, calligraphy, boot making and weaving.

For times and locations, visit the Open Studios website at www.napavalleyopen studios.org.

Grab the 2011 Artist Directory and Map at the Napa Valley Art Association office, 1520 Behrens Street, Napa or call 707-255-9616 for Directory locations.

You’ll find a handsomely-produced, full-color program featuring, on the cover, an exquisite photo of artist Ed Breed’s orange and red, blown and fused glass work.

In fact, the vibrant photos in the Directory should be seductive fodder for hopping in your car and visiting studios all weekend.

The body of work presented is as varied in styles and subjects as are the art mediums utilized:

  • paintings in oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels
  • ceramics, mosaics, sculpture and glass
  • photography, mixed media, printmaking and jewelry
  • textiles and weaving

and that’s just the tip of the paint brush!

Hats off to the collective efforts of the all-volunteer organizers of Open Studios for the gift of this no-cost opportunity to explore the wealth of talent and accomplishment of our remarkable artists and craftspeople.
