Chet Baker was one of the hippest, handsomest, most talented jazz musicians on the 20th-century scene; but most of us never got the chance to hear him play live.
This afternoon, music lovers can enjoy an afternoon of Baker's music played by a rising Bay Area trumpet star, Erik Jekabson, and his quintet at in the Napa River Inn.
Jekabson, who grew up in the Bay Area and attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music, told Brian McCoy of the Oakland Jazz Music Examiner that he discovered Baker's music in high school but only began playing it after college, when he was living in New Orleans. Jekabson has also lived and played in New York City.
Tickets are $40 at the door for today's 4 p.m. concert, which includes hors d'oeuvres. Napa Valley Jazz Society members pay half price.
