Suzy, Mike Marzalek Named 2013 "Philanthropists of the Year"

 Suzy and Mike Marzalek were named 2013 “Philanthropists of the Year” by United Way of the Wine Country.

The Philanthropist of the Year award recognizes outstanding community members for their exceptional commitment to service, community involvement and philanthropy. 

“Making a difference gives our lives tremendous meaning," Mike Marzalek said. "As a couple, sharing the same values about giving back to our community is one of the most gratifying attributes of our relationship and of our lives. “

This active retiree couple recently developed and introduced the Jobs Made Real website in partnership with Chop’s Teen Club.

In addition, Suzy Marzalek serves on the Board of Directors for Redwood Empire Food Bank and Santa Rosa Community Health Centers, and is an active member of the Health Action Council and its Committee for Healthcare Improvement.

She also serves on advisory boards for Roseland University Prep, Community Action Partnership, Sutter Medical Center, and Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific.

Mike Marzalek has also been working to improve software for Cochlear Implant Hearing Devices. The Marzaleks additionally support Santa Rosa Junior College and Scholarship Sonoma County. 

Long-time United Way volunteers and donors,  the couple are Tocqueville Society Members and Suzy Marzalek is a former Chair of the Board of Directors. The Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions around the world who have devoted time, talent, and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling our communities’ most serious issues.

 “We support United Way of the Wine Country, because United Way is in the unique position to mobilize time, talent and resources of businesses, non profits and the public sector," Suzy Marzalek said. "The high level perspective enables the United Way to focus on programs and initiatives that will have the greatest impact in our community.

This gives us confidence that our financial support is really making a difference,” she added.

United Way honored the couple at the Tocqueville Society Luncheon on March 8.

The event was hosted and sponsored by the Farmhouse Inn and Restaurant. Past award winners include Jane and Herb Dwight, Mark and Thea Dolan, Donald and Maureen Green, the Trione Family, Dr. Robert and Priscilla Schultz, and the Hansel Family.
