Napa's "Sizzling Seniors" Take Center Stage

"This is just dandy. I hope it becomes an annual event. There is so much information here for seniors and just a doggone good time," said Max Carson of Yountville at Napa County's first-ever festival all about seniors.

Max Carson and his buddy Herb Wright, both of Yountville, stretched out in folding chairs and cheered on the Yo-Yo contestants, stunned by their mastery of this century-year old pastime.

Carson and Wright were among the more than 300 people who came to Napa’s downtown Veterans Memorial Park Sunday for the first "Celebrating Seniors" festival, also known as "The Sizzling Spirit of Napa Seniors."

“This is just dandy. I hope it becomes an annual event,” Carson said. “There is so much information here for seniors and just a dog gone good time.”

Wright echoed his friend's thoughts.

“I don’t know what took them so long to put this together. All the information we need for senior services is in one location,” he said. “That’s great for us old folks. Many of us don’t drive and aren’t exactly computer whizzes.”

The park stage and Main Street between Third and Second streets were filled with booths donated by the Kiwanis Club. There literature from senior medical care, financial, social services, massages and health care products.

The American Cribbage Congress, which meets weekly at Napa Senior Center, was offering free cribbage lessons.

Linda Button Jones, the center’s director, was pleased with the event’s turnout.

“This is a great event for the seniors. They have a chance to get out and see all of the services available out there for them,” she said. “I hope this becomes an annual event.”

When singer Suzi Gilbert performed many seniors took advantage of the moment and glided across the dance floor.

Raffles were also popular, as many seniors took home wine gift baskets and other goodies.

They were also asked to join in cheerleading routines, Zumba for Seniors, Hula Hoop and paddleball led by Napa Mayor Jill Techel.

The "Sizzling Seniors" celebration was inspired by Napa Aging Commissioner Betty Rhodes, according to a city announcement.
