'Napa Valley Wine Wave' Breaks World Record for Largest Wine Toast

Sunday afternoon at Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena, the Napa Valley set its first world record when a group of 487 people received Guinness certification for the largest single rolling wine toast, breaking the Chinese record of 321 set in 2011.

Updated Sunday evening by a weary and exhilarated participant:

What America's Cup? The big international event in the Napa Valley this weekend was a determined effort by a group of St. Helena nonprofits to wrest a Guinness World Record from Guangzhou, China.

They—I should say, "we," for I was an invited participant in the Napa Valley Wine Wave—achieved a resounding success, shredding the 2011 Chinese record for the most people taking part in a single "rolling" wine toast.

The Chinese had assembled 321 people to set the first wine-toasting Guinness mark. The Napa Valley Wine Wave gathered a toast line of 487 people on the grounds of Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena, where Guinness Book of World Records adjudicator Johanna Hessling observed every clink and sip along the way.

"The entire Toast must be completed without interruption or mistakes," according to the rules: A single slip-up, one missed sip, would have forced the Wine Wave to start again from Glass One (that of St. Helena Mayor Del Britton).

But while there were a few flirtations with disaster, everyone did his or her duty all the way to number 487.

Flown in from New York especially for the Wine Wave, Hessling presented master of ceremonies Lowell Smith, of Kiwanis Club of St. Helena, with a certificate testifying that Guinness has certified the new world record.

Produced by the Kiwanis Club of St. Helena, the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce, CHEERS! St. Helena, Main Street St. Helena and the wineries of Appellation St. Helena, the Napa Valley Wine Wave was also a fundraiser for education, with proceeds from registration fees and a silent auction benefiting a scholarship fund aimed at educating students for careers in local industries including wine, food, agriculture and hospitality.

Participants also got their share: an afternoon of wine and snacks; live music from a reggae band and recorded entertainment by a DJ; the big moment and afterward, a commemorative medallion, etched wine glass and more live music from the St. Helena Town Band.

Good Luck

I think they'd have no problem breaking the world record if it weren't so darned expensive. Would the Napa Valley community come together to give the world's largest wine toast as a matter of community pride? You bet. But charge $100 to participate? Fuhgeddaboutit.
Louisa Hufstader (Editor) October 7, 2012 at 07:44 pm
We did it! Shredded the Chinese record by more than 150, with a whopping 487 toasters. The community can also take pride in the fact that all the money raised is going to a scholarship fund to educate young people for jobs in the Napa Valley wine, food and hospitality industries.

Good job toasters! I hope all who got "toasted" had DVD's or cabs!
Belle (Orchid Lady) October 8, 2012 at 12:12 am
Why does this stupid nexus change my spelling without MY permission?! I meant DD's NOT DVDs! grrrrrr.
Louisa Hufstader (Editor) October 8, 2012 at 12:22 am
Yes, and it changed "limousines" to "cabs." <grin>

[gotta love it]

FAR more important than the America's Cup—or the Blue Angels. Wish I could have been there.
Louisa Hufstader (Editor) October 8, 2012 at 01:45 pm
I do, too, it would have been fun to toast with you!
Mary Richardson October 8, 2012 at 02:27 pm
Congratulations! I loved how Barry Martin said you'd all been practicing for six months! Good job! :)
Louisa Hufstader (Editor) October 8, 2012 at 03:30 pm
Not all of us! I understand there were monthly practices during "Cheers! St. Helena," which would have been fun to take part in if I had a driver. But I jumped in at the last minute. Fortunately, as one of my comrades observed, most of us in the valley have developed "muscle memory" making it hard to mess up the clink-and-sip thing.
Now, if they'd told us NOT to sip after clinking — That would have been a challenge.

Just added some video "B-roll" (unedited) showing the Guinness adjudicator and toast participants including Miss Napa Valley 2012 Shelby Holliday.

The Guinness book of world records should have ben at the 49ers game a lot more people then 487 toasting every time they made a touchdown.

Wonder why the Saint Helena Community Band was invited to play and no one stayed around to give them the minimal courtesy of listening to their music?
Louisa Hufstader (Editor) October 9, 2012 at 09:27 pm
I'm guessing it's because the main event was over, the day was very hot and some people had been there for several hours. I liked the community band and hope to hear them again.

Is there any way to remove the blogs from the news page? Blogs are not news. They are opinionRead More pieces, and I would like more news. thanks!

Hi Beau and F: Yes, the &#39 are still there and not going away. I trust that tech people areRead More working on this...Sorry. And as far as the blogs being on the news stream, I can't change that except to keep the blogs mostly at the bottom and the news on top. The new platform is designed to highlight the blogs more than they were before. Occasionally if there is a timely, useful or highly newsworthy blog post I will move it up, but in general the news will be in the first 5 slots and the blog below. Hope that helps. Keri

Promoting blogs instead of news makes the Patch less useful. I liked having an alternate newsRead More source. Blogger promotion is too much like stroking the egos of local bloggers rather than promoting news and information. It seriously compromises the value of Napa Valley Patch as a news source.

It is easy to judge people from a distance. All of us have up and down times in life, none of usRead More have the same internal or external supports to deal with it all. Maybe those among us who feel superior could try to take a moment or more to see life from the perspective of someone who (even from a position of pain or vulnerability) has too much pride to accept the stigma of being in need of the social translation of "the lowest of the low" homeless shelter or addiction counseling. It feels good to try lifting others up rather than tearing them down; Maybe your smile or expression of something other than disgust could make a positive difference to move a person in need toward help.

I'd like to show appreciation to my grandfather on Father's Day. He taught me how to cook a roast,Read More garden, work with tools, use a shotgun and appreciate our surrounding waters. Always a patient man, my grandfather showed me so much. I got scared once when I broke a tool when we were building a skateboard ramp. He just replied with, at least you know not to do that anymore. I always admired how my grandfather loves my grandmother so much. That's old, true love. Fairy tail kinda stuff. Love we all want to grow old with. I love my grandpa with all my heart.

Loui Loui, it's called false pretenses and misleading claims. While I understand it's not theRead More editor's or tech's fault, releasing a product to the public as "New with better features!" shouldn't mean that it comes with glitches, bugs and frustration. And unlike Google+ and FB, Napa Valley Patch didn't "come out", we had a NVP that was working perfectly fine and Corporate Patch decided to upgrade. Can you imagine the ether-riots if FB did an "upgrade" full of glitches and bugs"?
Unfiltered Steve Simoneau June 13, 2013 at 10:54 pm
Actually, Loui, I left FB two years ago and haven't been back since. And while Patch and FB may beRead More "free" services they rely on users to exist. It's a symbiotic relationship, so both sides must be content for it to work efficiently.
