Napa Man Gets 1st "Legacy of Play Award"

Jim Roberts worked with Kiwanis Club to build playgrounds.

Landscape Structures Inc., a Delano, Minn.-based commercial playground equipment manufacturer, honored Roberts with the Steve and Barb King Legacy of Play Award during the company’s annual meeting in Minnesota.

During the past 13 years, Roberts has built nearly 60 playgrounds with the Kiwanis Club of Napa.

Roberts is a past president and past lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club of Napa, and has been a member of Kiwanis since 1956. The Kiwanis Club of Napa installed their first playground in 2000.

Since then, Roberts and his fellow Kiwanians have kept themselves busy by installing at least four playgrounds each year. While playgrounds are a main concentration for the Club, they perform a variety of other service projects including taking children with special needs on field trips throughout the year, the Marathon Readers program, Salvation Army Bell Ringing and much more.

“Many organization and individuals share the same mission as Landscape Structures, which is to enhance children’s lives,” said Steve King, cofounder and chairman of Landscape Structures. “Jim is passionate about helping children. And it shows in the many projects he’s completed with the Kiwanis Club. As I got to know Jim, it became apparent what an outstanding individual he is. Jim is doing things in Napa that you can only imagine.”

Roberts said the award was a welcome surprise.

“I was deeply touched by both this unexpected honor and the warm welcome from all of the folks at Landscape Structures,” said Roberts. “I was so impressed with Founder and Chairman of the Board Steve King who has obviously passed down his love of children and his drive towards excellence to all of the 300 employees. I will never forget my trip to Landscape Structures’ headquarters in Delano.”
