Great Local Hikes for New Year's Day or Any Day

Whether a 12-mile trek or a 3-mile scenic loop, Napa and the surrounding area has plenty of trails to choose from. What's your favorite?

Cataract Creek
Bolinas

Cataract Creek Trail offers a 7-mile loop through the scenic lands of the Mount Tamalpais watershed and culminates with Cataract Falls. The loop includes scenic vistas of the Pacific,, narrow single-track into the wooded hillsides into forests of young redwood and Douglas fir.

Steep Ravine
Stinson Beach

A 6.5 mile hike offers sweeping views of the ocean and dense woodland switchbacks next through a steep sided and lush canyon shaded by towering redwood trees. This is a popular trail, so get there early if you can. 1,900 elevation gain.

Sugarloaf Mountain Trail,
A moderate, 7.4 mile half day outing. You can take a circle loop close to the park's boundaries and be rewarded with great terrain from oak forest and grassland to lakes and mountain tops.

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park
Calistoga
Difficult, 4.0 mile route showcasing the natural flora and fauna of the area before the vineyards arose. Most of the park is rugged, with elevations ranging from 300 to 2,000 feet. 

Napa Valley Woodlands, Pioneer Cemetery, and Grist Mill
Calistoga
Here's an easy one, 3.1 miles, out and back to the Historic Bale Grist Mill. This short hike provides an overview of some of Napa Valley's pioneer history and journey through several of the region’s plant communities.
