'Calla Lily Alley' in Bloom, Despite Scoundrel Who Hacked The Flowers Last Month

Calla Lily Alley -- a living color exhibit on Fair Drive -- is open for its 20th year at Rohlffs Manor.

Hundreds of white lilies, still growing in the ground, are individually hand-painted from all-white to a magnitude of glowing colors, says organizer Ginger Harness.

"Calla Lily Alley is a place for family, friends, and visitors from all over the world to experience something especially cheerful that satisfies their sense of wonder," she said.

Harness was dismayed last month, however, when she claims that a person, or persons, hacked off scads of the blooms and tossed them over the nearby fence.

"Clean cuts were made with a scissors or clipper at the base of the blooms," she said, "leaving only the tall stems."

Harness suspects the March 18 act of vandalism stems from (pardon the pun) a rift between some residents and property management over rules regarding plants, she said

"Unfortunately, Calla Lily Alley was targeted as the place to make a statement of dissatisfaction and disappointment," Harness said, adding that she understands hurt and frustration over losing beloved plants and wishes all sides well.

As for the new display that runs through May on 2400 Fair Drive, Harness advises folks bring cameras to capture the "Alice in Wonderland atmosphere."

And reminds all that the lilies are for viewing only, so no picking allowed! The site is kid friendly, with easy access on a paved surface for walking or wheelchairs  -- or can be viewed from a slow-moving car.
