Watch Out for Animal Control Impostors

On Aug. 30 at approximately 7 p.m., residents of the Canyon Creek subdivision in the city of American Canyon contacted the American Canyon Police regarding a suspicious circumstance.

The victim reported that they had been approached by a man and a woman who claimed to be animal control officers. They further claimed that snakes were on the loose in that neighborhood and they needed to check the victims residence. The victim later reported they suffered a loss of property from their residence during this encounter.

The suspects in this case were described as follows:

1) A Hispanic Male adult, approximately 20 to 30 years of age, short (5’4” approximately) with a medium build, black hair and wearing a blue shirt. He referred to himself as “Mr. Reynolds”.
2) A Hispanic female adult, approximately 20 to 30 years of age, approximately 5’6” tall, medium build, bleach blond hair, blue eyes or blue colored contacts and wearing a navy blue shirt with a collar (similar to a mechanics shirt). She was also wearing a baseball hat with her hair tucked inside.

This case is similar in nature to others that have occurred in other parts of the Bay Area. The victim has viewed a composite sketch that had previously been prepared by an involved law enforcement agency and believes it accurately represents the female suspect in this case.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind all citizens that Animal Service Officers are employed by the Napa County Sheriff’s Department. These officers serve all parts of unincorporated Napa County, as well as the Cities of Napa and American Canyon and the Town of Yountville. Their uniform consists of green pants and a black police style duty belt.

They also wear tan shirts that bear a shoulder patch as well as a brass colored badge that is clearly marked “Napa County Sheriff”. They drive trucks with utility style beds. The trucks are clearly marked “Napa County Sheriff” and “Animal Services” in bold letters.

All Animal Control Officers have photo ID issued to them by the Napa County Sheriff’s Department. Any person claiming to be an animal control officer that is not as described above should be treated with suspicion.
