SENIOR HELPERS BRINGS DEMENTIA CARE EDUCATION TO NAPA VALLEY

Area families and caregivers learn to cope with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

 

Half of all Americans know someone who has Alzheimer’s disease. In California, more than 440,000 people over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is expected to increase to 660,000 by the year 2025 (source: Alzheimer’s Association).

On Saturday, February 15, and Sunday, February 16, 2014, Senior Helpers of Napa will host a seminar to address this growing public health crisis. Led by nationally renowned dementia care expert Teepa Snow, this educational seminar will help local families and healthcare professionals gain a better understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and how to work together to make the most of time with loved ones who are battling either disease.

WHAT:              Best practices in dementia care: Seeing it from the other side

 

Join Senior Helpers and Teepa Snow for a seminar that will provide essential information on how to have a positive and meaningful relationship with loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia throughout their journey. This session is helpful for care providers, family members and anyone who is trying to cope with dementia. It will provide basic information and communication skills to improve interactions and ultimately create more meaningful moments together. During this family-centered seminar, attendees will gain a better understanding of dementia and its common symptoms, behaviors and stages. Families and caregivers will learn strategies to reduce conflict, improve interactions and work together with loved ones.

 

Snow will introduce the Senior Gems® approach, which provides the right environmental support, care assistance and daily activities for each stage of the Alzheimer’s and dementia. The focus will be on helping attendees recognize and appreciate preserved skills and the value of using what remains.
