Crime & Safety

No Need for Drunk Driving Tonight, Thanks to AAA and Other Services

Choose a designated driver, take a taxi or dial up AAA for a free ride back home

Follow your first New Year's Resolution: Don't drive drunk.

The California Highway Patrol is making the case in by urging people—nay, warning people—to drive safe and sober during New Years weekend, as they promise officers will be out to enforce traffic laws, especially drunken driving, for those who aren't.

The CHP will increase enforcement starting at 6 p.m. Friday and continue through noon on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. Over last New Year’s holiday, 25 people were killed in collisions throughout California, and CHP made more than 1,200 arrests for driving under the influence during last New Year.

“Hopefully with the presence of additional officers on the roadway during the holiday season, everyone will arrive safely at their destination," CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said in a prepared statement.

For those who don't nominate a designated driver, or for those who find their driver a undisciplined in the role, AAA is again offering Tipsy Tow on New Years. The free service provides a one-way ride for the driver and tow for the vehicle to the driver's home—up to 10 miles.

Drivers, potential passengers, party hosts, bartenders, and restaurant  managers can call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) for a free tow home from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.

There are other local options, too. Napa Valley Tours and Transportation will be offering complimentary transportation on New Years Eve. Make sure to take care of the driver (a tip would be nice, and we don't mean advice) as he is working for free. Call (707) 251-9463.

Other local transportation companies that will be working tonight include:

Black Tie Taxi, 707-259-1000 or 888-544-8294

Napa Valley Cab  707-257-6444 or 800-640-8885.

California Taxi Cab Of Napa 707-645-1000

Valley Valet (Calistoga and upper valley) 707-942-9009
