Alleged Target Thief Tasered, Arrested in Napa

Heading for a getaway car with a cart full of merchandise he hadn't paid for, Steven Resendez, 33, allegedly fought with a police officer who used his Taser to subdue Resendez in the Target parking lot, according to Napa police.

A 33-year-old Napa man was jailed Sunday evening after allegedly trying to steal a cart full of merchandise, then attempting to fight off a security guard and a police officer who Tasered Resendez during the struggle, according to an arrest summary from the City of Napa Police Department:

An officer was dispatched to 4000 Bel Aire Plaza at the Target department store. The Loss Prevention Agent at Target, called to report that there was a known shoplifter about to leave Target.

He described him as having a large cart full of items. As an officer arrived at this location he saw Steven Resendez (33 yrs. of Napa) rapidly  pushing a shopping cart filled with items out the door of Target with a Loss Prevention Agent in foot pursuit.

When Resendez saw the officer, he abandoned the shopping cart and began to run northbound through the parking lot. The officer caught Resendez and an altercation ensued, at which time the officer deployed his Taser and subdued Resendez with the assistance of the Loss Prevention Agent.

Further investigation resulted in the locating of Elena Del Valle (33 yrs. of Napa) in a car in the parking lot of Target. Del Valle admitted to conspiring with Resendez to steal items from Target. Del Valle initially went into the store and helped Resendez choose items to steal. She then left the store and prepared the car for his exit.

Resendez was transported to Queen of the Valley Medical Center for minor injuries sustained during the altercation. He was medically cleared and then transported to Napa County Department of Corrections, where he was booked.

Resendez faces charges of burglary and resisting in the 6:30 p.m. incident. Charges against Del Valle will be filed with the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, police said.
